OpenDNS Umbrella Login

2015 / Redesign Login Screen and Workflow

Details

Company: OpenDNS, acquired by Cisco in 2015

Worked on: User experience, interaction and visual design

Images: To the left is the final login screen in current production as of 2018. Graphic images is by Open Graphiti, a project of OpenDNS for 3D Data Visualization Engine.

Background: OpenDNS (acquired by Cisco, Aug 2015), is a cyber security company leveraging DNS and big data for predictive intelligence. Two flagship products, Umbrella and Investigate, query from 80 billion DNS requests per day.

Challenge: The OpenDNS Umbrella app’s login screen was gray, uninviting, and didn’t leverage screen real estate effectively. Additionally the new design must also accommodate the new two factor authentication login workflow.

Solution: Designed a dynamic login screen with a greeting contextual to the time of day and the user. The new login screen also provide useful information such as the latest cyber security news from the OpenDNS security blog.
